Natchez to Tupelo

The morning started off with a downpour but I was still at the motel.

I left about 8:30 in a light rain and started up the Natchez Trace.

It is really a beautiful ride and will put your mind at ease.  There is very little traffic and on the entire route of over 400 miles there is only 50 access points to enter the parkway.

The Old Natchez Trace.

I had some pretty heavy rain for a while and then light rain until I neared Vicksburg.  There are many places to pull off for historic views.  One was Rocky Springs.

For some reason the entry fee was waived today.  It would have been $8.

On to Vicksburg.  This was an amazing place and if I was there 147 years ago I would have been in the battle which lasted from May 18 to July 4th.  There are many Memorials to Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio and some from Missouri and Kansas.  For more information go to: http://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm

There is also the USS Cairo Museum a Union ship that was sunk.

I asked about their Magnolia trees that were blooming and this is the time of the year they bloom.  They are large trees but do not bloom with as many blooms as those in Topeka.

Also in this area was the National Cemetery with all the graves.  It was very impressive and pictures do not do it justice just like Arlington Cemetery in DC.

I headed back to the Trace and found some of the Old Trace.

So the day turned out great with sunshine and temperatures only getting into the 80's.

That's a June 5 or 6th thing. We've been to the Rockies then or something and every year around the 5th or 6th of June they have a free entrance day to the National parks
